WANDERERS ABOVE THE SEA

Wanderers Above the Sea explores what it means to wander both in wonder or awe with life and in unease, through oceans of unease and uncertainty, searching outward for what lies within. It grew from my fascination with how we perceive ourselves and show it to others, especially online and in particular on dating apps, as reflections of our inner world and deepest needs.

The work brings together hundreds of Tinder screenshots that touch on the human condition: the preciousness of being alive, and the subtle, persistent unbearable unease that pervades us, the quiet constant search for something better and more pleasurable beneath all thoughts, words and actions, in all beings and doings. Each image becomes a mirror, inviting us to look inward, stripped of pretense. In doing so, we begin to see that we are not alone, but that we are all on the same journey, we are all so alike. Then we know that all of us is just one of us*, and this comes with a new kind of responsibility about our own and others’ lives, with an open heart and peace of mind.

*I honour the place in you where the entire universe resides. I honour the place in you of light, love, truth, peace and wisdom. I honour the place in you where, when you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us. Mahatma Gandhi
